It sounds like the first question might be determining whether or not there are any squirrels on Long Island at all (maybe just a few?)..would be a cool, observational, study to get a census of those critters on all the islands…

Wow – interesting question! Makes me curious. Maybe there’s some information about squirrels & chipmunks on the state of Maine’s wildlife and fisheries website ( https://www.maine.gov/ifw/fish-wildlife/wildlife/index.html ). Perhaps one of their biologists could give us some insights.

Shark, I like this difference between the islands. I really wonder how they got there in the first place? Do they swim? Ride as a stowaway on the Casco Bay Ferry? Dropped by an eagle? Thoughts anyone?

This is an excellent question! Are you certain there are no squirrels on Great Diamond Island and no chipmunks on Long Island? This would be an excellent capture/release study on the islands. This is important, as research is finding that chipmunks may carry more ticks than other small mammals. https://www.nsf.gov/discoveries/disc_summ.jsp?cntn_id=131439

I tried to trap a red squirrel on a small mid-coast Maine island this summer with a Havahart trap with squirrel bait and other food. I couldn’t catch it in 4 weeks. I do see there are videos that might have helped me. I wonder if trapping (or tagging) is possible in the time we have in order to make this a SMART question.
